When You Slow Down
I have learned a very important lesson this week. My Mother has come to visit
Jane and me for a few days and this morning I went to the grocery with Mom.
Now usually, when Jane and I go to the store, it is a very quick procedure.
We rush in and grab what we need and rush out again. We have a bit of
interaction with the clerk at the counter but almost never with other customers.
My Mother at the age of 85 walks very slowly and so I was forced to take the whole
grocery store thing at a snail's pace. While we were ambling through the store,
I over-heard a bit of conversation about a men's retreat. One man asked the other,
"Who is putting on this retreat?" The other man answered to my great surprise with
the name of Church where I have sung many times and where I know many many people.
I stopped and told the man I knew the Church. He mentioned that his son worked at
the Church and we spent a lovely 5 minutes talking about not only that Church but
many other things we had in common. My whole day is better for that conversation
and the feeling of connecting with a neighbor is truly delightful. "Slow down,
you move too fast" really came into clear focus this morning. Thanks mom for a
lesson learned.
